This term, the Year 6 children have thrown themselves into the topic “volcanoes” producing a wide range of exciting and interesting work based around the volcanic eruption of Whakaari Island in 2019. Their interest in this topic has been evident in the quality of work that they have produced. They have explored the wide-ranging volcanic types and considered the impact they have on landscapes and communities. This has been an excellent opportunity for us to combine our geographical knowledge along with our literacy skills. Writing a live news report, as if we were the news reporters at the scene of the eruption, allowed the children to understand what it must be like to report on a significant event.

In music, the glockenspiels have been our instrument of choice, as the children have been introduced to jazz and the concept of improvisation. They have played positively, memorising the musical score and will we develop this further next term.

Our units of P.E. have been outside (in all weathers) and we have been able to come together as a year group to work on communication and tactics, to solve an assortment of physical challenges. The children have particularly enjoyed practising their skills in our hockey sessions and it has been pleasing to watch them all take part and respond to team camaraderie. Many of the children have also been able to officiate and demonstrate their leadership qualities throughout these sessions.

During Science Week, the children’s curiosity came to the fore, as they were able to ask questions about the world around us, in order to suitably intrigue and ignite our interest! The children confidently presented their chosen item and their related question to the rest of the class. These ranged from querying the variety of shapes and colours on leaves, to why eggs are different colours, and how frogs use crystals to camouflage. Despite the short length of time, it has been another busy, action-packed term - well done, children!
