The Grove Primary School

Year 2 - Almond Class

almondclass(1)

This term, Year 2 have been fully immersed in learning about The Great Fire of London and we’ve been truly amazed by the depth of knowledge the children have gained about the events of 1666! Each child wrote a diary entry from the perspective of Samuel Pepys, bringing the past to life with vivid detail. They also stretched their imaginations, crafting creative time- travel stories where they journeyed back to witness the Great Fire firsthand. We’ve been so impressed by their rich vocabulary and ability to describe settings and emotions so powerfully.

In Design and Technology, the children completed a hands-on project, learning how to cut, measure, and join materials with accuracy. After designing their own models, they worked in small groups to build them, showing excellent teamwork, creativity, and resilience. A real highlight was our very own ‘Great Fire of The Grove’, where we safely re-created the fire of 1666 in the school grounds—expertly supervised by Mrs Gingell, our resident fire safety expert!

Of course, this term has been about much more than just the Great Fire of London. Year 2 have also taken part in a wide range of exciting events and activities. In June, a group of children joined Mrs Gingell, Miss Brine, Miss Williams, and Mr Thomas at the Dance Festival, held at The Forum in Bath.

The Grove dancers were absolutely brilliant on stage, performing with passion, confidence, and enthusiasm in front of a huge audience.

We were also thrilled to take part in the KS1 Poetry Competition, where Almond Class and Larch Class were named joint winners for the Best Group Performance, and Ben from Hawthorn received the Teacher’s Choice Award —a fantastic achievement!

As a special reward for all their hard work this year, the children enjoyed an afternoon of football fun with Scott from Football Fun Factory, which was a huge hit and a lovely way to celebrate their efforts.
