What a fabulous, busy final term we have had in Year One! We have had a lot of fun with this term’s topic ‘Off, off we go!’
We started our topic with the Rail Safety workshop. The children learned how to stay safe around railway lines, on platforms and in trains. They learned that trains are travelling so fast that it takes the length of 20 football pitches for them to stop! They also enjoyed dressing up and acting out the roles of different jobs on the railway.
For our favourite English activity, we travelled to Africa and learnt the story ‘Awongalema’. We performed the story using masks with the children eager to take the role of narrator as well as the different animal characters. We then wrote the story in our own words.
In Maths, we have been comparing number within 100, learning to tell the time as o’clock and half past the hour and also about money.
In Science, we have returned to our Plants topic and learnt to recognise and name some common wild and garden flowers. We went for a walk around our local area and identified a variety of garden plants. The children also designed their own plant using their knowledge of existing plants. They came up with some amazing botanical creations!
In Art, we have been working on several skills including weaving, plaiting, cutting, gluing, trimming and mixing materials to create textures by mixing paint with flour, sand and oats. We had a lot of fun making hot air balloons and they look fabulous.
In DT, we practised the skills of peeling, cutting and grating and made a delicious fruit salad. We used the fruit to create a picture or pattern on our plate then we enjoyed eating our creation!
In Geography, we have been naming and locating the seven continents and some countries within them as well as learning the four countries in the UK and where we are in the world. We have used maps, atlases and globes to do this. We also worked in small groups to make our own globes using beach balls. We have loved singing ‘The Seven Continents’ song too!
We have had a wonderful time in Year One and ended our topic with a fantastic trip on the train to Bath. We are so proud of everything that the children have achieved personally, socially and academically. Thank you for all the hard work with reading, spelling and times tables – it has made all the difference! We wish you all a brilliant summer break.
